Dhenkanal, Odisha : Along with crops such as paddy, groundnut, cashew nut, and potato, Dhenkanal has also earned recognition for its sericulture activities. The zonal office of the Assistant Director of Sericulture oversees operations across Jajpur, Dhenkanal, and Angul districts, providing employment to more than 200 people. The Central Silk Board, in collaboration with the Government of India, extends financial support for the sector’s growth.

Sericulture has become a major source of livelihood for rural and tribal communities in Dhenkanal. The region is known as a hub for ‘Tussar silk’, which supplies raw material to numerous saree manufacturers in places like Kamakhyanagar. Local wholesalers also contribute to strengthening the textile supply chain.

Traditional techniques remain an integral part of the craft, including the use of “BHIR” for muga silk reeling. Farmers are encouraged to grow eri plants and castor seeds, which form the basis of cocoon production. Landholders with as little as 0.5 hectares are provided essential inputs, ensuring inclusivity in production. Notably, the farmers here avoid the use of pesticides, giving Dhenkanal silk a distinct and sustainable identity. Regular awareness camps are also organized to educate and engage local communities.

There is a growing emphasis on sustainable and ethical silk production in the district. The Central Silk Board continues to strengthen infrastructure by introducing improved spinning wheels and modern reeling machines, ensuring that Dhenkanal remains an important centre for quality silk in Odisha.
