In Dhenkanal, the local municipality is leading the charge in effective urban waste management. By organizing the city into clusters with dedicated Municipal Collection Centers (MCCs) and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), they streamline the waste process. Their door-to-door collection system fosters proper waste segregation and transforms organic waste into affordable manure.
Highlights
- Dhenkanal Municipality's innovative urban waste management strategy.
- Organic manure produced from waste is sold for just ₹10 per kg.
- Future plans include biogas generation for renewable energy.
Cleanliness is one of the biggest challenges for any growing city, but Dhenkanal Municipality has taken remarkable steps to manage urban waste ,Scientifically and sustainably. Ms. Rashmita, Housing and Urban Development Officer, shared crucial insights into the city’s cleanliness strategy and future plans.
To ensure effective waste collection, the municipality has divided the city into several clusters. In each cluster, Micro Composting Centres (MCCs) and Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) have been set up. Door-to door collection of household waste is carried out daily by dedicated men and women workers.
This systematic approach ensures that wet and dry waste is segregated at the source itself.
The wet waste collected from households is sent to the Micro Composting Centres, where it undergoes treatment. The organic manure produced through composting is later sold at an affordable price of ₹10 per kilogram, thereby
promoting eco-friendly farming and recycling of waste. Dry waste such as plastic bottles, pins, and other recyclable materials is sent to the Material Recovery Facilities. From here, items with resale value are sold to scrap dealers, while single-use plastics and non-sellable waste are supplied to cement factories for further use, preventing harmful dumping in the environment.
Looking ahead, Dhenkanal Municipality has ambitious plans to convert waste into energy Projects such as biogas generation from urban waste are being explored, which will not only reduce landfill burden but also produce renewable energy for the city.
Ms. Rashmita also highlighted the role of the Mukhya Mantri Karma Tatpar Abhiyan (MUKTA), under which the Urban Waste Yojana has been introduced. Through this program, municipalities are providing jobs to local people,
turning waste management into a source of livelihood and community participation.
